Given prior evidence linking age-related DNA methylation changes to lipid system dysfunction—a critical pathway for maintaining retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptor health [25]—and the association between lipid metabolism impairments and drusen formation, a hallmark of AMD progression [26], we hypothesized that altered DNMT expression may contribute to disease evolution. The gene discussed is DNMT1; the disease is age-related macular degeneration.
