The causal link of diabetes and the decrease in the Clostridiacea class could be explained by the decrease in production of SCFAs, leading to a depletion of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and insulin production, since these SCFAs can lead to the secretion of GLP-1 by binding to G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) from L-cells; GLP-1 promotes insulin secretion and beta-cell proliferation [47,48]. The gene discussed is GCG; the disease is diabetes mellitus.
