These results are consistent with previous studies on ruthenium-based compounds, such as NKP-1339, the only Ru (III)-based drug that has undergone phase-Ib clinical trials in CRC treatment [29], and others [30,31,32] that trigger apoptosis via activation of the mitochondrial pathway, often associated with the upregulation of pro-apoptotic proteins such as BAX and the activation of caspases. Here, BAX is linked to colorectal carcinoma.
