Further support for the importance of potential cross-reactivity of insect allergens and allergens from other sources as an elicitor of local and systemic food allergy symptoms comes from a recent study in Poland, where analysis of more than 6000 reports from a multiplex IgE assay (ALEX2) revealed IgE sensitization to Tenebrio molitor mealworm in 4.3% of subjects with frequent co-sensitization to allergens coming from other invertebrates, such as the migratory locust (Locusta migratoria), crab (Chionoecetes spp). This evidence concerns the gene IGHE and food allergy.
