Given the high expression of MMP‐9 at wound edges in RDEB chronic wounds (Figure 4), which is thought to contribute to a failure to progress through the various stages of wound healing in a timely manner, the ability of diacerein to reduce MMP‐9 levels, as described above, supports its potential as a therapeutic agent to treat RDEB‐associated wound healing defects. Here, MMP9 is linked to recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa.
