Since the cerebrospinal fluid receives all the necessary amino acids from the brain tissue, and AST catalyzes the conversion of L-aspartate to L-glutamate, higher concentrations of L-glutamine (which is a derivative of L-glutamate) and lower concentrations of L-aspartate are found in the CSF in Alzheimer’s disease, which can be considered a consequence of higher AST activity in the brain [153].
