ACE2 and irritable bowel syndrome: SARS-CoV-2 causes the internalization of the ACE2/B0At1 complex (Devaux et al. 2021), thereby reducing its expression on the intestinal epithelial cells, as seen in other chronic inflammatory conditions such as Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) (Burgueno et al. 2020), motility disorder (Coles et al. 2022) and microbial dysbiosis due to higher levels of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 in the GI tract (Wang et al. 2022).
