GLP1R and Obesity: Approximately 6% of the US population reports currently taking a GLP-1 receptor agonist, but the proportion among individuals who report being told by a physician that they have overweight or obesity is closer to 1 in 5.1 In the US, 73.6% of the population has overweight or obesity.2 Historically, GLP-1 receptor agonists were exclusively approved to treat type 2 diabetes, but recent clinical trials concluded that they are highly effective at weight management and cardiovascular disease prevention, leading to US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approvals for these indications.3
