Approximately 6% of the US population reports currently taking a GLP-1 receptor agonist, but the proportion among individuals who report being told by a physician that they have overweight or obesity is closer to 1 in 5.1 In the US, 73.6% of the population has overweight or obesity.2 Historically, GLP-1 receptor agonists were exclusively approved to treat type 2 diabetes, but recent clinical trials concluded that they are highly effective at weight management and cardiovascular disease prevention, leading to US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approvals for these indications.3 Here, GLP1R is linked to obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
