In melanoma, two distinct subtypes of CAFs have been identified: inflammatory-like CAFs, based on the elevated expression of molecules related to complement system (C3 and C1S) and chemokines (chemokine [C-X-C motif] ligand 14, CXCL14), and proliferating CAFs, based on the elevated expression of genes associated with the cell cycle such as marker of proliferation Ki-67 (MKI67) and baculoviral IAP repeat containing 5 (BIRC5). The gene discussed is BIRC5; the disease is melanoma.
