DHODH and parasitic infectious disease: Inhibition studies with orotate and its derivatives have demonstrated their potential as competitive inhibitors, particularly against enzymes like dihydroorotase and dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH), suggesting a promising avenue for the development of antimalarial drugs targeting the pyrimidine biosynthetic pathway, with both orotate and its derivatives showing efficacy in reducing parasitemia in P. berghei–infected mice (Krungkrai, Krungkrai, and Phakanont 1992).
