In addition to GluCER, Duan et al. (2012)48 found that supplementation of sphingomyelin, a type of sphingolipid, upregulated genes encoding ceramide synthases (Cers) 3 and 4 in the epidermis of an atopic dermatitis-like skin mouse model and recovered damaged skin barrier functions induced by tape-stripping. The gene discussed is TLCD3B; the disease is atopic eczema.
