Heterozygous mutations in human CRYBB3 gene cause early congenital cataracts (Riazuddin et al., 2005; Jiao et al., 2016; Reis et al., 2013; Li et al., 2016) while aging processes within the lens impact structural integrity and native conformations of individual crystallins leading to age-related cataracts (see Benedek, 1997; Bloemendal, et al., 2004; Lampi et al., 2014). Here, CRYBB3 is linked to early-onset non-syndromic cataract.
