The upregulation of a catalytic component of the polycomb repressive complex 2 (PRC2) mediating tri-methylation of lysine 27 on histone 3 through EZH2; increased PRC2 methylating lysine 27 of histone H3 (H3K27me3) in endothelial cells isolated from atherosclerotic plaques; increased EZH2 expression in the endothelium in blood vessels in the regions of disturbed blood flow; and the role of acetylation and methylation in regulating NRF2, KLF2, KLF3, KLF4, and HoxA5 suggest the role of epigenetics in atherosclerosis [64]. The gene discussed is KLF4; the disease is atherosclerosis.
