The MMP2 gene is located on chromosome 16 at position 12.2 and encodes for matrix metallopeptidase 2 (MMP2), a type IV collagenase that is involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix (ECM) in normal physiological processes and acts as a novel H3NT protease possibly related to epigenetic modifications in AD [25,26]. Here, MMP2 is linked to Alzheimer disease.
