Although many drugs that target the hepatic stearoyl-CoA desaturase 51, C-C chemokine receptors 2 / 5 52, 53, farnesoid X receptor 54, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase 3 55, cyclophilin 56, fibroblast growth factor 57, galectin-3 58, glucagon-like peptide-1 59, caspase 60, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma 61 are currently being evaluated for the treatment of liver fibrosis and some of them have shown positive clinical outcomes 51-54, 57, but no specific drug has yet been approved for use in the clinic 20.
