Heller-Stilb et al. disrupted the taurine transporter gene (Taut) in mice and found large reductions in systemic taurine levels (e.g., plasma, liver, kidney, heart, skeletal muscle, and eye), reduced fertility, and retinal degeneration (near-absence of nuclei in the outer retina and low electroretinography [ERG] a-wave and b-wave amplitudes) [34]. Here, SLC6A6 is linked to retinal degeneration.
