Although SDC1 has been extensively studied for its shedding and use as a biomarker for several diseases (Bertrand and Bollmann, 2019; Rangarajan et al., 2020), shedding of SDC4 has been previously shown as an important regulator in pathologies such as cardiac dysfunctions (Strand et al., 2013; Strand et al., 2023), diabetes mellitus (Li et al., 2016), osteoarthritis (Bollmann et al., 2021), and cancer (Choi et al., 2010).
