A previous study reported that 10Panx or a purinergic P2X7 receptor antagonist significantly decreased the crypt damage in tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF‐α) and IL‐1β induced colitis of human colonic mucosa strip.[16] Consistent with this, PANX1 inhibition using 10Panx or probenecid could protect against the loss of myenteric neurons in mouse models of colitis.[12] Therefore, PANX1 inhibitors represent an alternative therapeutic approach for IBD and the associated intestinal dysmotility. Here, P2RX7 is linked to inflammatory bowel disease.
