NFE2L2 and Friedreich ataxia: A decline in persulfidation has been observed in aged brain and heart [4,16], neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease [4,17,18], Parkinson’s disease [4,5,17,19,20], Down syndrome [21], Huntington’s disease [4], and other diseases with sulfur dysregulation such as Friedreich’s ataxia (FRDA) [22] Currently, the only approved therapy for the latter is SKYCLARYS® (omaveloxolone), which increases Nrf2 levels by inhibiting its ubiquitination [23,24,25].
