HMGB1, a member of the high mobility family of proteins, can be secreted to the extracellular level to participate in the activation of the inflammatory response and induce endothelial cells to express adhesion molecules for chemotaxis of inflammatory cells, such as tissue extravasation, thus aggravating the systemic inflammatory response syndrome of sepsis (Naglova and Bucova, 2012). The gene discussed is HMGB1; the disease is systemic inflammatory response syndrome.
