Early studies considered CD4+ Th1 cells (secrete IFN-gamma) and regulatory CD4+ T cells (secrete IL-10 and TGF-beta) to be the main mediators of autoimmune uveitis, but development of this condition in IFN-gamma-deficient mice indicated the involvement of other lymphocyte types and led to the discovery of the key role of Th17 cells [7,8]. Here, CD4 is linked to autoimmune uveitis.
