Positron emission tomography (PET) has enabled the detection of Amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau protein accumulation, the molecular hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), demonstrating that Aβ plaques and neurofibrillary tangles formed from phosphorylated tau protein can be detected several years before the onset of clinical symptoms [1].
