On a molecular level, berberine lowered the mRNA and protein levels of eotaxin (CCL11), a chemokine that attracts eosinophils, as well as decreasing the mRNA and protein levels of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) and the Th2 cytokines IL-4 and IL-5 in the skin of dermatitis mice, while having no effect on the Th1 cytokine and IFN-γ. Here, CCL11 is linked to dermatitis.
