Calcium deposition in the disk and the expression of extracellular calcium-sensitive receptors (extracellular calcium-sensing receptors, CaSR) are closely associated with GPCRs in degenerative disks, suggesting that the diffusion of intestinal-derived SCFAs to the IVD can lead to calcification and IDD (Kotterman et al., 2015; Li et al., 2022). This evidence concerns the gene CASR and intervertebral disk degenerative disorder.
