ACE2 is highly expressed in the lung, heart, kidney, and plasma, contributing to multiple organ injuries during the COVID-19 outbreak.[22] The involvement of ACE2 and RAAS has also been detected in ocular tissues, including the cornea, conjunctiva, retina, and aqueous humor.[23–25] Notably, ACE2 receptors expression is significantly higher in glaucomatous eyes compared to non-glaucomatous eyes.[26] Exposure to the COVID-19 virus may induce inflammation in aqueous humor circulation through ACE2 receptors present in aqueous humor and ciliary body. This evidence concerns the gene ACE2 and COVID-19.
