Interestingly, the increased GFAP expression in astrocytes may be indicative of reactive phenotype and morphological changes often associated with inflammatory conditions in neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) (Benninger et al., 2016; Chatterjee et al., 2021; Cicognola et al., 2021; Yeh et al., 2011). Here, GFAP is linked to early-onset autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease.
