BCL2 and epilepsy: Under epileptic conditions, apoptosis-related proteins undergo changes and there is a downregulation of mRNA and protein expression of the anti-apoptotic protein B-cell leukemia/lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) in mice, which is concomitant with an upregulation of mRNA and protein expression of the pro-apoptotic proteins Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax) and caspase-3, but reversing these alterations can mitigate neuronal damage and apoptosis in epileptic mice, thereby conferring a neuroprotective effect and ameliorating epilepsy symptoms [8,25].
