Genes such as MUC2, MUC5AC, MUC6, and MUC13, as well as the predominant intracellular presence of mucin, appear to be involved in the development and recurrence of mucinous ovarian carcinoma and can be used to differentiate between primary ovarian and metastatic lesions. Here, MUC2 is linked to ovarian mucinous adenocarcinoma.
