A study that evaluated the molecular characteristics of HCC patients from Mongolia, the country with the highest incidence of HCC in the world, with an important representation of HBV–HDV coinfection, suggested a novel molecular mechanism of hepatocarcinogenesis mediated by HDV: overexpression of spectrin alpha erythrocytic 1 (SPTA1), a scaffold protein that regulates cell shape, arrangement of transmembrane proteins, and organization of organelles [56]. This evidence concerns the gene SPTA1 and hepatocellular carcinoma.
