On the other hand, the NPY acts through several mechanisms to exert a neuroprotective effect (stimulation of neuroproliferation and neuronal survival, activation of autophagy for the clearance of aggregate proteins, suppression of excitotoxicity and attenuation of neuroinflammation), so it has therapeutic potential in neurodegenerative diseases, since it can attenuate the pathological mechanisms that lead to neurodegeneration.
