INS and depressive disorder: Mechanisms underlying this association are not fully understood, but evidence points towards a potential bi‐directional relationship where (a) insulin resistance acts as a route to depression by interfering with how stress is regulated (Lyra e Silva et al. 2019) and (b) depression acts to increase insulin resistance via mediating health‐related factors like waist circumference, which are also linked to stress (Pearson et al. 2010).
