Margeta et al. demonstrated that Gal-3 was upregulated in activated microglia in two different mouse models of glaucoma (inducible ocular hypertension and the DBA/2J mouse), and that genetic knockout (Lgals3−/−) or pharmacological inhibition of Gal-3 via intravitreal injection of the small molecule inhibitor TD139 had a neuroprotective effect on RGCs [9]. This evidence concerns the gene LGALS3 and glaucoma.
