At initial stage of atherosclerosis, expression of adhesion molecules, such as intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1) [7,8], by the vascular endothelial cells attract circulating monocytes to attach the luminal side of artery and penetrate the intimal layer, with subsequent uptake of cholesterol in the vascular wall to become foam cells and accumulate to form plaques. The gene discussed is VCAM1; the disease is atherosclerosis.
