Genetic testing for disease-causing germline (constitutional) pathogenic variants (e.g., phosphatase and tensin homolog [PTEN], DICER1, succinate dehydrogenase [SDHx], TP53) should be considered in the workup of select patients with diagnosed follicular cell-derived thyroid carcinoma, such as those with unique histomorphological and immunohistochemical features that may indicate inherited disease, or patients with hereditary cancer syndromes. The gene discussed is TP53; the disease is thyroid gland carcinoma.
