Previous studies have shown that the SCARF1-mediated degradation of AcLDL accounts for 60% of the amounts of AcLDL degraded by the pathway independent of scavenger receptor class A (SR-A), suggesting that SCARF1 may play a key role in the development of atherosclerosis in concert with SR-A in some situations (Tamura et al., 2004). The gene discussed is MSR1; the disease is atherosclerosis.
