Compared to cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers, blood-based biomarkers have lagged behind (Teunissen et al., 2021), and some blood-based biomarkers such as neurofilament light chains and glial fibrillary acidic protein may have the potential to provide information on the progression of neurodegenerative diseases and to monitor the effects of treatment. This evidence concerns the gene GFAP and neurodegenerative disease.
