They used non-obese diabetic mice expressing the DQ8 celiac disease susceptibility gene with or without gluten exposure and proved three interventions to activate the intestinal AhR pathway: (i) treatment with a low- or high-Trp diet before and after gluten exposure, (ii) oral supplementation with AhR ligand-producing Lactobacillus during gluten treatment, or (iii) treatment with either an AhR agonist or vehicle during gluten treatment. The gene discussed is AHR; the disease is celiac disease.
