CDH1 and periodontitis: Thus far, the pathogenic mechanism responsible for periodontitis is not yet fully defined; however, recent literature suggests common features between periodontitis and malignancy include activation of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway responsible for loss of epithelial phenotype associated with E-cadherin downregulation.19Genetic variants ofE-cadherinreportedly play a role in cancer predisposition18and can predict the survival outcome of patients with breast cancer.20Consequently, we hypothesized that E-cadherin SNPs could be associated with increasing susceptibility to periodontitis.
