A collaborative meta‐analysis that integrated the kidney outcomes from large placebo‐controlled trials of SGLT2 inhibitors from the SGLT2 inhibitor Meta‐Analysis Cardio‐Renal Trialists' Consortium (SMART‐C) concluded that in addition to the established cardiovascular benefits of SGLT2 inhibitors, clinical evidence support their use for modifying risk of CKD progression and acute kidney injury, in patients with type 2 diabetes at high cardiovascular risk, and in patients with CKD or heart failure irrespective of diabetes status, primary kidney disease or kidney function.80 This evidence concerns the gene SLC5A2 and acute kidney injury.
