In order to investigate the neuroanatomical correlates that underlie OD, the brains of post-mortem patients have been examined using histological stains such as Hematoxylin and Eosin and immunostaining against α-synuclein to identify the presence of LBs and LNs in neurons and glial cells in areas linked to olfaction. This evidence concerns the gene SNCA and osteochondritis dissecans.
