Because of the multifaceted role of TREM2 in microglial physiology, enhancing TREM2 function is emerging as a promising therapeutic approach for late-onset Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases: potentially by simultaneously improving phagocytic capacity and metabolism of microglia (Schlepckow et al, 2023). The gene discussed is TREM2; the disease is early-onset autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease.
