The aetiology of anaemia in RA is multifactorial which includes anaemia of chronic disease and nutritional deficiency especially iron and folate.10 Multiple reasons have been postulated for this anaemia of chronic disease which include low erythropoietin levels, shortened RBC lifespan, increased levels of inflammatory markers, and reduced erythropoietin response in the bone marrow. This evidence concerns the gene EPO and rheumatoid arthritis.
