CD36 and atherosclerosis: TMA is converted into TMAO, a proatherogenic factor, in the liver by flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMOs)​ [3,7,12], which​ promotes cholesterol accumulation within macrophages by inducing scavenger receptors such as CD36 and SRA1; both receptors are involved in the uptake of modified lipoproteins contributing to foam cell formation and the development of atherosclerosis, as explained in Figure 1​ [1,7].
