The leading variant in 18q12.3 (rs16943099) was shown to disrupt the binding site of a podocyte‐specific transcription factor Mafb (MAF BZIP Transcription Factor B),55 with mafb recently discussed as a potential kidney disease treatment target.63 Moreover, a variant within METTL4 (rs185299109) has been significantly associated with DKD (LINC00470/METTL4, p = 1.3 × 10−8)40. This evidence concerns the gene METTL4 and diabetic kidney disease.
