Previous studies have shown that during aging NfL and YKL-40 levels increase and grey matter network measures decline, additive to elevations in predementia Alzheimer’s disease.26,27,54-57 Our finding suggests that also in non-Alzheimer’s disease related aging, loss of axonal integrity and inflammation may affect grey matter network integrity. The gene discussed is NEFL; the disease is early-onset autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease.
