Finally, the importance of the actin cytoskeleton in the invasivenessof melanoma cells was tested with the use of cytochalasin D. Thiscompound is an inhibitor of the interactions of cofilin and actin,thus blocking the polymerization and reorganization of actin filaments.77,78 Our study showed that cytochalasin D has cytostatic and cytotoxiceffects (with longer exposure), leading to the shrinkage of melanomacells and blocking their ability to transmigrate through mechanicalbarriers.
