Increased ET-1 immunohistochemical staining was seen in the lungs of subjects who died with ARDS [56], and it was demonstrated that in patients with ARDS, ET-1 is produced mainly in the lung and is associated not only with pulmonary vasoconstriction but also with the development of permeability edema, leading to the impairment of oxygenation [57]. This evidence concerns the gene EDN1 and acute respiratory distress syndrome.
