Senkal et al. have demonstrated that in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, C18-Cer, synthesized with the involvement of CerS1, plays a pro-apoptotic role whereas C16-Cer, synthesized by CerS6, plays an anti-apoptotic role [38,39,40]. The gene discussed is CERS1; the disease is head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.
