The existing pharmacological approach for C1-INH-HAE is based on three principles: on-demand treatment for acute attacks, which is indicated in all patients for all attacks on the basis of the patient's decision and should be administered as soon as possible; long-term prophylaxis (LTP), which is performed for patients experiencing frequent, disabling, severe attacks that cause strong impairment of the patients’ QoL; and short-term prophylaxis (STP), which is used for prevention of attacks in predictable situations [10]. The gene discussed is SERPING1; the disease is hereditary angioedema.
