GAD1 and respiratory failure: Tamamaki's study found that the decreased expression of GAD67 in GAD+/− mice resulted in impaired GABAergic development, persistent defects in synaptic transmission, and triggered inhibitory/excitatory transmitter imbalance (Tamamaki et al., 2003); however, Kuwana's study found that GABA synthesis was reduced by 95% in GAD−/− mice, resulting in death at birth due to respiratory failure (Kuwana et al., 2003).
